I really want to get away from the whole “trapped in a mobile phone contract” concept. I’ve had contracts with all the UK providers over the years. I always fall for the promise of “a shiny new phone for free, but you are stuck with us forever….moohahaha……” I have ported my number all over the place. I ditched Cellnet for 1-2-1, via O2, Orange, Easy mobile, Vodafone (twice) etc……… Well no more. Today I finally fell for the Skypephone on Three PAYG. Before you laugh, I would like to point out that yes I have heard the horror stories about 3 and this phone in particular, but it does have one or two plus points. Firstly for just over £30 (quidco etc..) I have a neat looking 3G phone with a good quality 2megapixel camera, bluetooth, free Skype (which I use all the time) Free eBay, Free MSN messaging for the younger members of the fold to contact me and all I can eat internet for £5 per month. Calls and texts anywhere are a flat rate 12p, though you can buy bundles that drastically reduce those costs.
This morning I watched the news from the BBC in bed, something I have never managed to get working with T-Mobile or Vodafone on far superior phones. Mobile TV is cheaper with 3 too at only £2 a month.
I have loaded Gmail, Google Maps, Opera Mini and loads of music on already (the phone came with a welcome 256mb Micro SD card, big enough for now). The kids are already asking if they can ditch their providers and get Skypephones too.
