Had an email from the BBC this morning, telling me that I am about to lose my beeb.net email and website. I have been with them for a long long time, so the notice was not a welcome one. The excuse offered seemed plausible enough, the Beeb wants to concentrate all their resources on their own websites including TOP GEAR…….yes very green I know. So goodbye Beeb old chum, the past 8 years have simply flown.
“We’re writing to let you know that the beeb.net internet access service is going to be closing on 30th June 2008. This means that you will no longer be able to access the internet or send and receive email via beeb.net from this date and will need to migrate to a new service provider to continue using the internet. We do apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you.
When beeb.net was originally launched back in 1999, accessing the internet was for most people something new and unknown. BBC Worldwide launched the service to provide a trusted brand and a helping hand to get people online.
Now, in 2008, access to internet services is commonplace and part of our day-to-day lives and there are many well known companies offering a diverse range of packages and connectivity options.
With the core role of BBC Worldwide being to provide value back to the BBC through the distribution of its programmes and brands around the world, we believe the role of providing internet access is best-served by companies who specialise in providing this particular service.
All beeb.net services will be affected, including: Pay As You Go access, dial-up email services, web hosting and beeb.net broadband access and email. On the beeb.net website, you will find a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) guide explaining what you will need to do in order to continue using the
internet after 30th June 2008.
You can reach the FAQ here: http://www.beeb.net/faq.html
It’s important to make sure that you act on this email as soon as possible to avoid any interruption to your use of the internet. Additionally, if you are currently using your beeb.net email address for newsletters, online shopping and banking sites as well as for contacting people via email then
you will need to change your email address details recorded with such services.
We would like to thank you for using beeb.net for internet access and wish you well with your new supplier. Again we are very sorry for any problems caused by the withdrawal of our service.”
